We know Apple has a launch event scheduled for September 7 where we can see the Apple Watch 8 and iPhone 14 – but now it seems likely that another new Apple smartwatch will appear as well.
A new post on Macotakara (opens in new tab) (through MacRumors (opens in new tab)) points to the existence and imminent arrival of an Apple Watch Pro. The wearable is said to have a larger 47mm case and it is also rumored to come with a flatter design than the standard Apple Watch.
We’ve heard leaks about this device before, but this seems to be more evidence that these earlier predictions were actually accurate. A more durable titanium case and longer battery life were also mentioned regarding this new wearable.
Professional or robust?
There’s been talk of an improved, flatter design for the Apple Watch 8, and in fact, it was first touted with the Apple Watch 7. Now, it looks like the updated aesthetic will be exclusive to a new model in the series.
The 47mm size information is new – you can currently get an Apple Watch in both 41mm and 45mm sizes – but there’s been a lot of talk about an Apple Watch Rugged Edition. This appears to be the same as the Apple Watch Pro, and has also been called the Apple Watch Extreme Edition by some sources.
Whatever the naming strategy, Macotakara says Apple will put on a big show by revealing the Apple Watch Pro, perhaps giving it the “one more thing” treatment that was previously used to introduce new products (including the original Apple Watch). .
Review: More watches for your consideration
The Apple Watch has clearly been a successful product for Apple, whatever metric you want to use. It is the best seller when it comes to smartwatches, and successive iterations of the product have improved and expanded its features over the years.
If the rumors about an Apple Watch Pro (or whatever the name is) are accurate, it looks like Apple wants to give iPhone owners even more reason to buy an Apple Watch: don’t like the standard edition? Well, here’s a bigger, tougher, more expensive version you can buy.
Take a look at the rugged, outdoor smartwatches – particularly the excellent Garmin range – and there’s a market Apple has yet to tap. These wearables appeal to people who are a little more serious about running, walking, hiking, biking, or any other activity.
It remains to be seen how durable and long-lasting Apple’s new smartwatch turns out to be, but it can’t hurt Apple having multiple watch editions on sale – and let’s not forget the more affordable Apple Watch SE option.
